Change to opening and training

We are short staffed at present. Please bear with us while we get back to strength.

To allow us to maintain services we will not be opening Monday or Tuesday evenings. Opening hours till further notice are:

Monday to Friday - 8.30am to 5pm

The Knowledge Hub and Cyber Room remain available 24 hours a day to those with a functioning swipe badge.

There will be a reduced training programme. You should contact the library team to organise a session as required. We are always happy to work with small groups to tailor the session you need and can deliver this as part of your education / service meetings.

Doctors both new and experienced will find How to survive in medicine: personally and professionally of immense support.

And those finding difficulties with colleagues and customers wll appreciate the revised edition of Lilley's Dealing with difficult people, & the new title Surviving the toxic workplace (hopefully not relevant to us locally!!)

Lots of brand new titles in our October New Books List, as we scan reviews and notifications to bring you the latest influential publications.

These include many midwifery titles, including Midwifery survival guide, Midwives coping with loss and grief and Supporting sucking skills in breastfeeding infants.
We also have several copies of the 2011 (14th) edition of Mayes' midwifery, the key local text for midwives.

In the field of medicine, there are two new titles in the Oxford Desk Reference series, Cardiology and Oncology. And junior doctors struggling with management concepts will be interested in Leadership and Management for Doctors in Training. The latest edition of Harrison's principles of internal medicine is also now available.

This month sees the arrival of paper copies of the latest edition of the Royal Marsden Manual of clinical nursing procedures - the key procedures we follow within this Trust. We already have the ebook online, accessed from the Trust network home page (see under Trust Policies).

As an exercise in quality control, we have been going through our stock to ensure that we have the most current edition of key titles. You will see this reflected in the lists over the coming months.
One item likely to be in great demand is the 2nd edition of Gopee's Mentoring and Supervision in Healthcare which has just arrived in the library.

However, we are not neglecting new titles, & this month sees the purchase of several publications from the Open University, including two Test Yourself titles for nurses - Pathophysiology and Essential Calculation Skills.

For the emergency practitioner we have the Oxford Desk Reference : Major Trauma and Practical Pre-Hospital Care, amongst others.

NHS Evidence changes go live

The NHS Evidence sites have a new look to go with changes to content and functionality.

To access electronic Journals or search the databases (Medline, CINAHL etc) you now need to click Journals and Databases. You can always access them via NewhamCat or the old http://www.library.nhs.uk/ link will continue to redirect you. Please note NHS Evidence has a separate login system that does not work with NHS Athens. Generally if you always look for where it says Athens Login you should be alright.

New on NHS Evidence are NICE Pathways and A-Z Topics.

NICE Pathways offers a visual approach to NICE Guidance not dissimilar to the (no longer available) Map of Medicine. They describe themselves as "a network of NICE information. For example, the diet pathway links up with the physical activity pathway; the COPD pathway links up with the smoking pathway. Over time, all of NICE's guidance, quality standards and related tools will be added to this network of information. For the first time you do not need to understand how NICE classifies different types of guidance to view everything NICE has said on a particular topic."

A - Z Topics offer a concertina style presentation to offer rapid access to materials in NHS Evidence. There are sections on medicines, patient information, guidance and a general introduction (currently drawn from Clinical Knowledge Summaries).

There will be new versions of the KLS leaflets on accessing electronic resources with the revised look soon. You can always contact us with any questions related to NHS Evidence or finding information.

About open access

What is open access? Open access publishing is a publication model in which neither the reader, nor the reader’s institution, pays to access the material. The authors may pay a fee (which they may be able to pay from a research grant), or there may be no fee.

Open access is unconnected to copyright, in that some open access journals publish articles under a Creative Commons licence, which allows non commercial re-use with acknowledgement, and other open access material may be subject to the usual sort ofcopyright restrictions. Open access does not imply that the material has not been peer reviewed. Material published in an open access journal will be peer reviewed. Material in an open access archive may also have been peer reviewed, although it is worth determining exactly what it is that you are reading – is it a pre-peer review version of a published article,or a version that has been peer reviewed but not copy edited, for example.

SPARC Open Access Newsletter A regular publication, produced by Peter Suber.

SHERPA (“Securing a Hybrid Environment for Research Preservation and Access”) started as a JISC funded project, and continues as one of the major support mechanisms for repositories, and therefore one of the major sources of information and advocacy material for open access archiving.

Searching the contents of open access repositories

Google indexes repositories and other open access material, and other search engines may do as well. But if you want a search targeted to open access material, so you know that the links to full text will work, here are some specialist tools:

INTUTE Repository Search IRS searches across 76 UK academic repositories, including The Depot, which is a repository for use by academics whose institution does not have its own repository.

OAIster is a union catalogue of digital resources and is a major source for open access material available in full for free. It currently includes almost 13 million records from around 850 sources, including institutional and subject repositories.

OpenDOAR Search A trial service, using Google’s Custom Search technology, which searches repositories listed in OpenDOAR.

Scientific Commons currently indexes 13 million items, from open access repositories. It enables you to see who is working with who, as well as giving links to the full item in its home repository.

Open access archiving: which publishers allow it?

Authors can sign away a lot of rights in their work when it is accepted for publication (and perhaps not all authors realise that), and need to check if they are allowed to archive aversion of their article. Many publishers will allow archiving, but perhaps not immediately,and perhaps not the archiving of the final published PDF file. Instead, they may allow the final draft (the authors’ manuscript after peer review and acceptance for publication, but before copy editing and the application of publisher’s style guidelines). Grant awarding bodies and open access

Some grant awarding bodies make open access publication or archiving a condition of receiving an award. The major source of information about who requires what and whether they can offer help with it is: JULIET

Subject repositories

In addition to institutional repositories, containing work from one institution, there are also subject repositories. OpenDOAR and ROAR will help you locate them, but UK PubMed Central is the one that affects medicine and health the most. Many health and medical funders mandate authors to deposit their work inUKPMC.

PubMed Central, maintained by the National Library of Medicine, is an archive of backfiles of biomedicine journals, with full text available free. There are links to this from PubMed and it is included in our A-Z list (Athens required). But it also contains authors’ manuscripts of papers funded by bodies that mandate them to make their work available on open access.

UK PubMed Central Contains author manuscripts of papers published by UKPMC funded researchers, who mandate deposit in UKPMC.

You may or may not be aware that we have a collection of books and DVDs to support your personal fitness and wellbeing. These are in a separate collection called 'Well At Work', shelved in the centre of the library just opposite the main door.

We have recently added several new titles to the collection. They are listed in our February new books list and include such items as '15 Minute Workout', 'Garden your way to health and fitness', Wii fitness for dummies' and 'Yoga in bed' (my personal favourite...).

First New Books List for 2011

We start off 2011 with a bumper list of over 150 new titles, many in the area of education and research. These include such books as The complete guide to referencing and avoiding plagiarism, Clinical teaching made easy, and Information skills: finding and using the right resources.

There are also new editions of standard nursing titles, eg Gulanick's Nursing care plans & The Lippincott manual of nursing practice, while new titles for nurses include First steps in clinical supervision and Clinical judgement and decision-making in nursing and interprofessional care.

Thanks for the over a hundred responses we received to our survey. Ten lucky winners should have received an email asking them to collect their prize.

Your comments are greatly valued to help guide how we develop the service. They also remind us of how things we think we have cracked can remain an issue.

The good news for us was that your satisfaction levels with the service remain steady and high.

Opening hours were raised as an issue. There seemed some confusion over our current hours (8:30am to 7pm Monday & Tuesday, 8:30am to 5pm Wednesday to Friday) with people unaware of the evening opening. The increased 24 hour provision, with the Knowledge Hub and Cyber Room both available, does seem to have improved matters somewhat. It is unlikely that we will be able to manage more staffed hours in the foreseeable future.

There was a slight fall in satisfaction around ejournals. We have greatly increased our selection of ejournals in recent years and are working to make access as convenient as possible.

You can see our full list of titles by logging in with your NHS Athens at MyJournals (NB if not logged in you only see a very partial picture). We have made many titles available without logging in when you are at work. This includes most of the BMJ publishing titles, those from the AMA, over 300 titles from Wiley Blackwell and a selection from Elsevier. We hope to add more over time. In some cases we have access to a journal via a supplier other than the main publisher – an example here is the Lancet which you can access via our A-Z list or via a search on our databases but you will not get via the publishers own site.

The rating for the book collection remains good. However there were still comments that we lack current editions. I think two main reasons can be identified for this. Firstly items may be on loan. The very latest books are those most in demand so a scan of the shelves should be supplemented by checking NewhamCat to see if someone else has the item you require. Secondly we might not have been told what you need. You can help us to help you by bringing in any reading lists you are issued, showing us interesting reviews or simply by suggesting titles. We nearly always buy recommended titles. We will be working with our suppliers in April to assess where we still have older editions and this should hopefully further improve the quality of books on the shelf. Do check out our new books lists that are on this blog and circulated in the monthly Knowledge News email.

The creation of the Knowledge Hub as a space for shared working does seem to have helped somewhat with noise levels. Library Staff have also been trying to avoid talking across the office but it is always likely that the Main Library will be more noisy than people would like. You can help by taking calls outside and using the Knowledge Hub if you need to discuss your work.

We got some brilliant responses to our question regarding the impact of information provided by the KLS. Here are just a few examples:

“the librarian helped me find a key reference paper which I later used for teaching students”

“Child with Y-- obtained information specific for children from UpToDate.”

“Access to case reports on Z helped formulate a plan for confirming diagnosis and managing drug interactions”

“I attended a recent teaching session on "Finding the Evidence: searching the health care database". It helped me a lot...”

We have emailed those who asked us for more detail of any aspect of the service and in response to specific questions and suggestions. If anyone feels they still need more information then please do get in touch (in person or via email). Thanks again for you input.

December New Books

The final new books list of 2010 contains a good collection of nursing books. Some will be new editions of key texts (eg Pudner - Nursing the surgical patient); others are brand new titles (eg Vaughans - Nursing fundamentals demystified).

Several items for the allied health professions are on the list. New dietetics titles include Payne & Barker Advancing dietetics and clinical nutrition, while for occupational therapists there is Occupational therapy interventions by Meriano, and in physiotherapy we have Mosby's field guide to physical therapy.

Two hefty tomes for surgeons are the newly acquired Atlas of general surgical techniques by Townsend and the 9th ed of Zollinger's atlas of surgical operations.

There are over 100 new items on the list, while NewhamCat holds details of our complete stock.

October 2010 New Books List

We constantly update our stock with newly published titles and new editions of old favourites, and this month is no exception. The October New books List shows over 100 titles received in the last month, spanning a wide range of topics.

Latest editions of the Oxford handbooks (eg in Oncology) are all now available, along with new editions of many other classics (eg Ghaye's Reflecton: principles and practice for healthcare professionals and Polit's Essentials of nursing research).

New titles span the range from Aquatic exercise in pregnancy to The checklist manifesto : how to get things right which discusses how professionals deal with the complexity of their responsibilities.

Closing the loop

Most years the Knowledge & Library Service runs a user survey in November. On starting to prepare the latest version we realised we had not provided a promised update on what you said and what we were going to do about it. So here, with apologies for the delay, is some feedback.

The top three areas influenced by information from the KLS were advice to colleagues, teaching and confirming patient care.

70% of people reported learning something new and 60% shared that learning with colleagues.

The KLS scored high satisfaction scores with most aspects of service rated very good or good by 75% or more of respondents. The areas of lowest satisfaction were ebooks, ejournals and opening hours. We are working hard to improve ejournal availability and ease of access (watch this space). Opening hours will hopefully be an area of increased satisfaction in the new survey following the creation of the Knowledge Hub - greatly increasing the quality and quantity of 24 hour study space. eBooks are an area for further investigation. Experiments to date have seen poor uptake.

Lots of comments were received and these are particularly helpful. A recurring theme was the need for quiet working space. The Knowledge Hub has been designed as a noisier area and groups needing to work together are encouraged to use that space. Hopefully this will take some noise out of the main library. KLS staff are trying to be more quiet as we appreciate that we have an impact on noise levels. Many of the comments demonstrated a lack of awareness of what the KLS offers with people asking for things we already provide. To try and bridge this knowledge gap we have started a monthly news letter that is circulated to all registered users and via the Trust Information Bulletin. You can find back issues online.

BMJ Best Practice 3-month trial

In a single source Best Practice combines the latest research evidence, guidelines and expert opinion – presented in a step-by-step approach and covering prevention, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis.

Best Practice has a unique-patient focused approach, and provides a second opinion, at the point of care, without the need for checking multiple resources.

You will need your NHS Athens to sign in. Best practice has a similar simple interface to UpToDate with brief evidence linked topic reviews. It has the advantage that once set up you can use it on your mobile.

BMJ Learning - the training you need at the time you want

Have you taken a look at the hundreds of e-learning resources available from BMJ Learning?

Aimed at a broad range of healthcare staff BMJ e-learning resources are available as one of the following learning modules:
· Just in time – for fast evidence based updates
· Interactive case histories – test your knowledge with multiple choice questions
· Read, reflect and respond – offers a range of scenarios for you to comment on

All modules are peer reviewed to ensure quality.

You can set up your own personal learning plan to record the modules you take. Some modules lead to CME points and some enable you to print a certificate upon completion.

You will need your Athens username and first time users will need to register with the site itself. Once you have completed the registration you will only need your Athens details in future.

The new books list this month shows well over 100 titles, as our purchases for the current financial year start to arrive.

But first, we must draw your attention to the new Department of Health White Paper, Equity and exellence : liberating the NHS which, as an e-book, is now listed with a full-text link on NewhamCat, our library catalogue. We will also receive a paper copy in due course.

The latest edition of Giddens' Sociology is now available, and we have several new titles on communication, including the useful Behavioral medicine : a guide for clinical practice by Feldman and Christensen which explores in practical terms the dynamics of the doctor-patient relationship.

Pick up a FREE book from Newham General Reads

They say there is no such thing as a free lunch. The KLS is pleased to announce that you can now satisfy one hunger for free.

Newham General Reads is our new leisure reading collection. Thanks to kind donations from your colleagues you can pop down to the Knowledge & Library Service to pick up free fiction to read.

The books are located near the comfy chairs close to the entrance of the main library room. You do not need to register with us to take one (or more) and you won't be chased to return things. Please note the Well @ Work healthy living books and DVDs still need to be borrowed in the usual way.

When you have finished with a Newham General Reads book you can return it to us, pass it to a colleague or just gift it on in some other way. Donations are welcome.

There is a great range of books available from all kinds of authors. Please come by and have a look and tell us what you think.

Recent visitors to the library will have noticed changes to the familiar location of sections of collection. Recent years have seen a healthy increase in the number of books we hold. These take up an increasing amount of space (despite regular clear outs of older material). Fortunately we have been able to make space for these by using shelves previously occupied by journals (increasingly an electronic only affair).

Suggestions for new books are always welcome and acted on where possible. To make it clearer for users how we select books to add or remove from the shelves a Collection Management Policy has been prepared. You can find the draft of this here. We welcome your comments on this policy.

The latest New Books list is now available.

Titles cover a wide variety of subjects, ranging from Accident & Emergency Medicine (eg the new edition of Practical resuscitation for healthcare professionals by Moule) to Speech therapy (Handbook of child language disorders by Schwartz).

Also covered this month are Legal Medicine (ABC of medical law from the BMJ ABC series), Cultural Diversity (Caring for Hindu patients by Thakrar & others) and Health Services Administration (eg Health care errors and patient safety by Hurwitz & Sheikh). And we link electronically to the Newham results of the National NHS Staff Survey.

We also invest in definitive clinical titles, such as the new edition of Scott-Brown's otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery.

We have a couple of new titles for occupational therapists this month Curtin's Occupational therapy and physical dysfunction, & Occupational therapy for people with learning disabilities by Goodman.

If you work in orthopaedics, then you will be pleased to see Dandy's latest edition of Essential orthopaedics and trauma now in stock. We also have the 8th edition of the weighty 2-volume Surgery of foot and ankle by Coughlin & others, along with Gowned and gloved orthopaedics: introduction to common procedures by Sheth & Lonner.

And another heavyweight title is the newly acquired 7th ed of Mandell, Douglas, and Bennett's Principles and Practice of Infectious Diseases.

Grab a better selection of ejournals

Responding to user feedback we are working to maximise the range and quality of ejournals offered.

For some time now we have had the BMJ group titles available (BMJ, EMJ, ADC, Gut, Heart etc) and the JAMA & Archives collection. We have also have over a thousand other titles via a number of suppliers.

As part of the renewal of journals purchased locally for 2010 we have swapped the paper subscriptions we had with Wiley Blackwell into electronic form. We have invested further to buy access to some three hundred journals from the same publisher. You can find a full list here (NB select Medicine and Nursing Collection from the drop down in Column N to see just the titles available). This means important titles like BJS, BJUi, JAN, BJOG, BJD, BJH and many more are now available at your convenience. Generally you will find the last ten years of issues are available.

The simplest way to browse all our journals is via MyJournals. You need to ensure you use your Athens login (register online if you have not yet done so) to ensure you see everything we offer. You will also find our journal holdings linked from any searches you make in our research article databases. It is worth noting that we some times have access to a title but not direct from the publisher site (The Lancet is one example of this). Use MyJournals to be sure to get the full picture.

First New Books List of the new decade!

We have just published the list of new book acquisitions for January 2010. Not a particularly extensive list it must be said, as we have been occupied with various 'turn of the year' tasks to improve and maintain our service.

Midwives will be interested in the purchase of Essential midwifery practice : postnatal care by S Byrom and Spiby's Evidence based midwifery : applications in context.

We also have several new titles in the area of childcare nursing, including Perioperative care of the child: a nursing manual and the new edition of Meeks' Nursing the neonate.

NewhamCat slightly wobbly on feet

We recently announced the good news that NewhamCat is available from anywhere rather than just on site.

As part of this process we made some changes to the initial start up page. The major change is shifting the onsite quick link for journals into the "Search and Find Answers Section" rather than it having it's own button. There will be more changes as we further develop our online services.

We have been suffering a few teething problems. Apologies if you had difficulty accessing NewhamCat over the past few days. Some technical changes have been applied and we will be monitoring the situation. Let us know if you experience any difficulties - we can always search for you.

December New Books

The New Books list for December contains over 130 newly acquired titles.

Among these, we have several on diabetes management, eg Therapy for diabetes mellitus and related disorders, & The uncomplicated guide to diabetes complications, both from the American Diabetes Association.

New books for nurses include Stoma care by Burch, and Essential nursing care : a workbook for clinical practice by Lawson & Peate, while our midwifery section has been supplemented by a selection of items, including the 4 volumes of Midwifery Essentials by Helen Baston & others.

In response to a request from the Radiology dept we have purchased the 2 volumes of Final FRCR Part A SBA MCQs by R Proctor.

We buy many relevant non-clinical titles too - this month they include Dignity at work by Rennie Peyton, Writing essays for dummies by Page & Winstanley and How not to worry by C Carr.

We are pleased to announce that you can now access NewhamCat from any web based computer. This means you can search, renew or reserve books - at your convenience.

You can still use the NewhamCat icon on your desktop or just type NewhamCat into your browser address bar on site for speedy access.

Off site you can either use the address http://newhamcat.nhslibraries.com or search on Google for NewhamCat and it will appear in the first few results.

We are including the new NewhamCat link in any overdue emails we send so please take advantage and renew your books. The overdue email gives you all the information you need to login.

Latest book purchases

The November list of our latest book purchases has just been published.

This month we added several new titles on CBT, including Kinsella's Cognitive behavioural therapy for mental health workers: a beginner's guide, and in neurology we have the new edition of Brain's diseases of the nervous system, and also Evidence-based neurology by Candelise.

End of life carers will find the two titles Speaking of dying: a practical guide to using counselling skills in palliative care and Why is it so difficult to die of great help in communicating with and understanding their patients.

And for those seeking funding for education or research, the 2010 edition of the Grants Register is available in our Quick reference section, while Hickson's Research handbook for health professionals is a new title in our extensive research section.

UpToDate - online now...

We are pleased to announce that UpToDate is now available to all Newham University Hospital NHS Trust Staff.

UpToDate is a tool to help you answer clinical questions quickly. It has a helpful straightforward search facility and offers topic reviews that include a synthesis of the literature, recent evidence and specific recommendations for patient care.

Access is provided via the Intranet and not via the main UpToDate website. The simplest way to gain access is to click on NewhamCat and then look for the UpToDate logo.

Please report any access difficulties to us so that we can look into them.

October New Books

Here is our list of new titles purchased during October 2009.

Nurses and mentors will be pleased to see the 4th edition of the classic The practitioner as teacher by Hinchliff, and educators on the clinical side will be interested in several new titles in their field, including How to teach continuing medical education.

The GMC's new code on Confidentiality has just been published, and we have a copy in the library, plus an electronic link via our network catalogue NewhamCat; similarly with NUHT's Annual report 2008/2009. NewhamCat also has links to the Performance Rating 2008/09 for NUHT and Newham PCT.

For those worried about swine flu there is Dread: How fear and fantasy have fueled epidemics from the Black Death to avian flu to counter any alarmist tendencies.... And maybe Maggot therapy: a handbook of maggot-assisted wound healing will offer some new thoughts on an ancient therapy.

Of course, we also have many new clinical, nursing, & midwifery textbooks - the list has full details. And NewhamCat has details of our complete book stock. Carry out a single word search to find items with your word in the title (eg 'stroke').

The list of recently acquired book titles is now available.

We have several items for anaesthetists this month, including the new edition of the 4-volume set of Clinical Pain Management, & the 6th edition of Barash's Clinical Anaesthesia together with its accomanying Handbook.

Dermatologists will appreciate the new edition of Goodheart's photoguide to common skin disorders as an aid to diagnosis, and all clinicians and student will be pleased to see the arrival of the latest Kumar & Clark's Clinical Medicine.

Of more general interest, we now have several books on Project Management & PRINCE2, including Project management demystified, and Prince2 for dummies.

And to relax you after a hard day at the NHS coalface, our Well @Work collection now boasts two new titles: Everyday calm: relaxing rituals for busy people & Office yoga: simple stretches for busy people.

Midwives will be pleased to know that the new edition of Myles' textbookbook for midwives is now available to borrow, and we have purchased several new nursing texts including the UK editions of the Made Incredibly Easy! series, & books on clinical nursing supervision, eg Milne's Evidence-based clincial supervision: principles and practice. Check out the list for more new nursing & midwifery/obstetrics books.

Surgeons will be interested in Clinical surgery made easy: a companion to problem-based learning and Top knife: the art and craft of trauma surgery, while Medical London: city of diseases, city of cures will make fascinating reading for anyone interested in the medical history of our city.

A couple of new titles on stroke management will be of use to both therapists and clinicians: The Stroke clinician's handbook and Stroke treatment and prevention.

Where are we on the Map?

The NHS in Newham is working on localising the Map of Medicine. You can read more about this resource in our previous post on this topic.

As part of the process of getting the Map up and running we need to establish a base line position on awareness and use. All clinical staff in Newham are asked to complete this brief pre-implementation online survey.

July 2009 New Books

The July list of New Books has just been published.

For those thinking about taking a course in the Autumn, we now have a paper copy of the new edition of Floodlight, and also the latest paper copy of HotCourses for the London area. We also have the current British Qualifications, a guide to all qualifications in the UK, so you can see what can be achieved and what is out there to help you further your career!

If you are struggling to create a guideline, then How to write a Guideline from start to finish: a handbook for health professionals by P Bowker was written with you in mind (but don't forget to contact the Knowledge & Library Service as well - we can help you identify current practice and assist you with your searches).

For managers we have added, amongst others, the 4th edition of the classic Gower handbook of project management by R. Turner, and in the area of cultural diversity we have links in NewhamCat (our online network catalogue) to all 13 titles in the Understanding Muslim ethnic communities series. Each community, eg The Nigerian muslim community, has its own book.

In response to a request from paediatricians, we have purchased the new edition of the Child surveillance handbook, & copies of Evaluation of the sexually abused child & Interviewing children about sexual abuse: controversies & best practice.

RefWorks on trial

We are pleased to be able to offer a three month trial of the RefWorks bibliographic management system - available now till October.

This web based resource is a great way to create a bibliography you can then share with colleagues and use to support your writing for publication or study. You can import records from the results of a literature search on our databases (or from PubMed if that is your interface of choice).

To import from our databases make sure you export results in the RIS format. You then select this as import filter and "NHS - National Library for Health" as database. This will import your record including any links to electronic copies or details of paper copies.

You will need an Athens username (register online). You can then access access RefWorks from any Internet based machine.

MIDIRS Digest - now easier to access

Midwifery staff will likely be familiar with the work of MIDIRS.

We are pleased to announce that MIDIRS Digest ("the Pink Digest") is now available to all staff as an electronic publication rather than the previous paper version.

Drawn from the MIDIRS site:

"MIDIRS Midwifery Digest provides maternity health professionals with an overview of key midwifery and medical research to inform their practice. The information is gathered from over 550 international journals and original articles are commissioned on the hot topics being discussed by the midwifery profession."

You will require an Athens username. You will find results from MIDIRS digest included when you search for literature, if you access MyJournals while logged in with your Athens username or you can bookmark this direct link. Please get in touch if you need any assistance accessing this resource.

Do you value the Specialist Libraries / Collections?

The recent launch of NHS Evidence is part of a wider set of changes to the knowledge and library environment in the NHS. The old National Library for Health included what were then called the Specialist Libraries bringing together high quality evidence on a specialty or topic area and publishing regular updates. You can sign up to receive these via email using our Knowledge Alerts service.

The Specialist Libraries have been renamed Specialist Collections but currently remain largely unchanged. They are now being reviewed by NHS Evidence to decide what form they will take in future (or whether they need to continue at all). We would encourage you to have your say via this survey. It will take around 5 minutes to complete and closes very soon (17th July).

New Books for June 2009

The list of new books for June is now available, a bumper month with over 90 titles added to our collection.

We've been concentrating on updating our IT support section with new titles on various aspects of Microsoft Office 2007, including the Teach Yourself Visually Series on Office 2007, Powerpoint, Access, Outlook & Word. The Excel title in this series will arrive next month.

We now have the new 2-volume edition of the New Oxford textbook of psychiatry by Gelder & the 11th edition of the weighty Williams textbook of endocrinology. In response to a request from the Greenway Centre we have also purchased the 4th edition of Mildvan's International atlas of AIDS.

To assist managers in all disciplines there is The 80 minute MBA: everything you'll never learn at business school by Reeves, & Seamless teamwork: using Microsoft Sharepoint technologies to collaborate, innovate & drive business in new ways by Sampson, along with the 5 volumes of Better Partnership working.

More journals on your desktop

People often ask us if we have a particular journal and then look over hopefully at the display shelves where the current paper issues live. While we do have a small collection of titles in print these are only a tiny fraction of our actual journal collection which is now nearly all electronic.

Recently we have added a new collection of high quality electronic titles from the publisher Lippincott Williams and Wilkins. Access is simple either

browse them using MyJournals (you will need to be logged in using Athens though)
or search them using Healthcare Databases Advanced Search (again Athens required)

Titles include - AIDS, American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, Anesthesiology, Circulation, Critical Care Medicine, the Current Opinion series, the Endocrinologist, European Journal of Emergency Medicine, JAIDS, J Patient Safety, J of Trauma IICC, Journal of WOCN, Nurse Educator, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Simulation in Healthcare and so on.

Building a better library

The good news is that the Knowledge & Library Service Reading Room (opposite the main library) is going to be refurbished. Users of this room will know that it has long been in need of some care and attention.

The bad news is that this means temporary loss of access and some general disruption.

Please bear with us - we promise it will be quick and worth while.

Building starts on the 11th but we will be clearing the room from the 10th. The rest of the Library will be open and working as usual throughout.

KLS at Adult Learner's Week Open Day

Many thanks to all of you who visited the Knowledge and Library Service stand at Adult Learner’s Week Open Day on Thursday 14th May in the Lecture Theatre where we answered in excess of 120 enquiries.

The big screen demonstrations of Anatomy.tv were much appreciated as our ‘skeleton’ flexed his muscles, twirled and blew kisses to the audience.

A leaflet on setting up your learning plan on BMJ Learning was available – do have a look at the wide range of modules that are available. We are happy to advise on this resource as it has such a potentially wide audience.

Electronic resources often require an NHS Athens username and password to gain full access. You can self-register for this or come along to see us for advice on any aspect of NHS e-learning packages.

We reminded staff that our book collection is ‘Not all Doctors and Nurses’ with productivity and efficiency books on display – search NewhamCat (the library catalogue) for our full collection.

It was lovely to meet so many HCA’s drawn to the stand by the British Journal of Healthcare Assistants and now received regularly in the Library.

New books added April 2009

We have just published the latest New Books List. In the field of medical education several PasTest titles have been added and we now cover most of their catalogue, including the 2nd editions of our own Adam Feather's EMQs for Medical Students.

Occupational therapists will be interested in the arrival of the 11th edition of Willard & Spackman's Occupation therapy while Boog's Palliative care: a practical guide for the health professional: finding meaning and purpose in life and death will provide support for those working in the sensitive area of palliative medicine.

We now have the rather pricey Irwin & Rippe's Intensive care medicine, & we have also purchased Health services marketing: a practitioner's guide by R Thomas, a vital handbook in today's competitive arena!

Worth looking at...

As previously posted the new NHS Evidence portal went live on Thursday 30th April.

You can find it at www.evidence.nhs.uk and we recommend you give it a try.

So what will you find there? Drawn from the site:

A fast, comprehensive search function for clinical and non-clinical information
Access to a resource collating information on new drugs to support commissioners
A new NHS Evidence portal homepage
Links to resources previously part of the National Library for Health.

The search tool offers you the means to carry out the kind of search you might do on a well known search engine but against a selection of high quality resources. You can enter one or more words, use "quotes marks" to search for a phrase and should get lightning fast results in return. There is a good help page.

Once you have some results there a special filters to help you narrow your search down. Or you can just add another search term in the box above your results.

The results are relevance ranked by default to promote high quality evidence and guidance to the top of the page. You should find good results in the first ten hits.

You won't find journal articles in NHS Evidence (apart from where they are included in one of the old Specialist Libraries - now known as the Specialist Collections). If you want to search the journals the system is unchanged with the A-Z MyJournals for browsing or Health Care Databases Advanced Search to carry out literature reviews. The National Library for Health website remains available for the time being (in a fetching new shade of blue).

We will be offering more information on getting the best out of NHS Evidence in the near future. In the mean time if you get confused, stuck or excited about the changes - please get in touch.

We are expecting a new arrival...

30th April will see the arrival of a new website offering a high quality, evidence oriented, search experience.

There will be some changes to the current National Library For Health website but these should be largely cosmetic to start with.

We will keep you informed on developments!

Anatomy learning with Anatomy.TV

A number of years ago we had access to the Anatomy.tv resource via the now defunct National electronic Library for Health site (more on upcoming changes to it's replacement in a future post).

As an interim measure we were able to lend CD Rom based versions of the same (still available via NewhamCat) but these proved rather unwieldy and take up was low.

We are pleased to announce that access to Anatomy.tv has been restored and it includes even more resources. You can access it from anywhere using your Athens username.

For those encountering it for the first time Anatomy.tv is a fantastic website that offers 3D anatomical images by region or system that you can rotate, zoom and alter the level of detail on (nerves, muscles, just skeletal etc). There are also MRI images, MCQs and quizzes and specialist modules for Sports & Therapy and Surgery.

We have been able to access the resources on site at NUHT but do let us know if you have experience any issues.
