Latest New Books list now out

We have just published the April / May edition of our New Books list.

We've combined two months, as the turn of the financial year is always a slow time for book purchasing.

There are several useful titles for anaesthetics specialists, including the latest edition of the classic Miller's anesthesia, & Training in anaesthesia in the Oxford Specialty Training series. Check our online catalogue NewhamCat for other titles in this series already in stock.

For emergency units, Acute cardiac care : a practical guide for nurses by Kucia & Quinn will be a useful guide, along with Acute stroke nursing by Williams, Perry & Watkins.

Surgeons will appreciate, amongst others, Basic surgical skills & techniques by Stoker & Jain, & Emergency surgery by Brooks et al.

And medics of all persuasions should enjoy First do no harm : being a resilient doctor in the 21st century, which offers advice on how to balance life and work.

Pick up a FREE book from Newham General Reads

They say there is no such thing as a free lunch. The KLS is pleased to announce that you can now satisfy one hunger for free.

Newham General Reads is our new leisure reading collection. Thanks to kind donations from your colleagues you can pop down to the Knowledge & Library Service to pick up free fiction to read.

The books are located near the comfy chairs close to the entrance of the main library room. You do not need to register with us to take one (or more) and you won't be chased to return things. Please note the Well @ Work healthy living books and DVDs still need to be borrowed in the usual way.

When you have finished with a Newham General Reads book you can return it to us, pass it to a colleague or just gift it on in some other way. Donations are welcome.

There is a great range of books available from all kinds of authors. Please come by and have a look and tell us what you think.

Recent visitors to the library will have noticed changes to the familiar location of sections of collection. Recent years have seen a healthy increase in the number of books we hold. These take up an increasing amount of space (despite regular clear outs of older material). Fortunately we have been able to make space for these by using shelves previously occupied by journals (increasingly an electronic only affair).

Suggestions for new books are always welcome and acted on where possible. To make it clearer for users how we select books to add or remove from the shelves a Collection Management Policy has been prepared. You can find the draft of this here. We welcome your comments on this policy.

New Books List for March 2010

The latest New Books list is now available.

Titles cover a wide variety of subjects, ranging from Accident & Emergency Medicine (eg the new edition of Practical resuscitation for healthcare professionals by Moule) to Speech therapy (Handbook of child language disorders by Schwartz).

Also covered this month are Legal Medicine (ABC of medical law from the BMJ ABC series), Cultural Diversity (Caring for Hindu patients by Thakrar & others) and Health Services Administration (eg Health care errors and patient safety by Hurwitz & Sheikh). And we link electronically to the Newham results of the National NHS Staff Survey.

We also invest in definitive clinical titles, such as the new edition of Scott-Brown's otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery.
