Have your say - win prizes! Now closed...

The survey is now closed. Thanks to all those who have responded.

We get lots of helpful feedback from KLS users and welcome it at any time (library@newhamhealth.nhs.uk).

It would be great if you could please take five minutes to complete this brief survey - there are fewer than ten questions. The survey is running across North East London so do not be suprised to be asked who you work for. We are interested in the views of both those who regularly use us and those who currently do not.

You do not have to provide your contact details but if you do we can follow up on any issues. We will also enter you into a prize draw to win one of our highly desirable mugs (twenty up for grabs this time).

The survey will be running till 7th of December so please - give us your views!

We will let you know how the comments stack up.

Resource of the ... 3. MyJournals

Todays resource is MyJournals from our colleagues at the National Library for Health .

Put simply this is the one stop you need to find out whether we have a journal available electronically or in paper form.

This counteracts some of the complexity caused by us using multiple suppliers as we attempt to maximise the number of journals we can offer you.

It works best if you use your Athens login - if you don't login you will only see the England wide collection of titles. Once logged in you get extra titles as a London person and as a Newham person. You should be able to jump straight to the full text for electronic titles. MyJournals even includes details of journal content available for free on the Internet.

Perhaps more surprising for something called MyJournals is that you can use it to find details of some of our ebooks. At present I would recommend you stick with NewhamCat for these which is more comprehensive and now includes over 600 links to books and reports in electronic form.

As ever - if we haven't got the journal article you need available straight away we can always get hold it.

Hurray - NewhamCat picks itself up again

Happy to report that NewhamCat has pulled through and is now up and running again.

Things might be a little slower than usual for a couple more days and there may be brief relapses so bear with us.

Apologies for any inconvience caused.

New books added in October 2007

As promised here is the latest edition of our new books bulletin.

Remember these are a selection of all the titles added last month rather than every last item. You can always use NewhamCat to see if the book you are interested in has been added or is on order.

The list includes ebooks alongside the paper kind.

There is a new edition of "Symptom Sorter" by Hopcroft. A link to the Tooke report on MMC. A book on "Minor surgical procedures for nurses and allied healthcare professionals" by Martin. The latest from Tony Ghaye on "Building the reflective health care organisation" and updated editions of the Lock books on "Project Management". Revision texts for DRCOG and MRCOG and the like. And this years BNF for Children.

Take a look. And suggest things you would like to see purchased (Library@newhamhealth.nhs.uk).

As for the picture? The Library at Angkor Wat!

Let sleeping cats lie...

Apologies are due to a few of you who found NewhamCat asleep on the job from late afternoon yesterday (8 November) till 8:30am this morning.

The Library was having some additional power sockets fitted and this placed the Cat out of action.

Lesson learnt - next time we are going to suffer a similar problem we will let you know via this blog which will now also appear on the "sleeping" page.

Please let us know (call - 0207 363 8016 email library@newhamhealth.nhs.uk if you ever find yourself dealing with a recalcitrant NewhamCat or any of our other resources. The sooner you let us know the sooner we can get things fixed.

Three new books to be taken daily...

For many years now the Knowledge & Library Service has published a new books list.

We have decided to start publicising it here on the blog.

The new issue is a few days away so in the mean time here is the list for September.

If you are onsite at Newham General or in the PCT you can check NewhamCat to see if an item is available straight away or make a reservation. You can always give us a call or email and we will happily put things aside for you.

With upwards of a thousand books added each year (hence the post title) there should be something for all interests.

Resource of the ... 2. Images search on NLH

Featured resource today is the Image search engine from the National Library For Health .

While you can find images using Google or Ask you may well find an awful lot of junk before you find a high quality image. You also need to be aware that using imagesourced from the web can leave you in a dubious position in terms of copyright.

NLH Image search is a great way to search across a range of purely medical image collections - including some not available for free on the web (you will need your Athens username to see the full size versions of these). You get an instant preview and far reduce your risk in terms of copyright.

The images include Gray's Anatomy, dermatological images, ECG traces and more - all searched from a single box.

The KLS team are always happy to advise on Copyright questions.

Shh! Why is it so quiet?

Avid readers of this blog will have noticed we have gone rather quiet of late.

For this many apologies - we have been having a few technical problems. Hopefully normal service will now resume.

Shh is something of a loaded word for librarians - part of an image problem the profession has. For our part we do try and maintain a reasonable level of quiet in the Knowledge & Library Service because this is what people consistently ask us to do. The Library Reading Room is a good venue for group work where you can safely make a bit more noise without disturbing too many people.

I am afraid most of the noise in the library tends to come from the librarians!

HILO - time to move on

Sometimes things break down and sometimes you just have to move on.

In the case of HILO it is a bit of both.

In recent times HILO has been getting rather dated. Changes at SHA level have impacted the people who manage it and reduced their ability to keep it up to date. It has also been suffering due to network problems that have left it inaccessible for several days now to those on NHS Net computers.

At the same time there has been ongoing improvement to the website of the National Library for Health. You can access all of the resources you used to find on HILO and more besides. I will be writing about more of these resources over the coming weeks - in the mean time - please redirect your browser to http://www.library.nhs.uk/ in future instead of HILO.

PS Your Athens details remain unchanged. If you don't have an Athens username and password yet then register online from any computer at work.

Resource of the... an (ir)regular series - 1. Mosby's dictionary of medicine, nursing and health professions

Like the tube we try and run a regular service. Also like the tube we might sometimes get behind.

There is a constant flow of interesting stuff arriving in the KLS and this series of regular(ish) items will try and pick out some of the more interesting ones.

Please feel free to suggest things you think we should cover - or even write a review of something yourself and send it along to
alan.fricker@newhamhealth.nhs.uk

As a starter I give you what may seem a rather old fashioned choice "Mosby's dictionary of medicine, nursing and health professions" . Why use a paper dictionary when you can just use "define:whatever" in Google (Following the link may give you an indication!)? Or indeed use an online medical dictionary search (currently part way down the main National Library for Health page).

Well having a scan of this exemplary dictionary you will find:

  • Crystal clear definitions you can rely on
  • A balance between technical and non technical language (ie you won't need a dictionary to use the dictionary)
  • Brilliant illustrations and photos (including a colour atlas of anatomy)

Next time you are after a definition - give it a look. Or give us a call (0207 363 8016) and we will gladly have a look on your behalf. You are likely to find it gives you better results quicker than a web search.

The latest Wanless, Gold guide, etc etc

One of the key benefits of NewhamCat is the ability to add links to the electronic form of publications as soon as they are available.

So this week has seen us add "The gold guide" for Postgraduate Medical Education and the latest report by Derek Wanless "Our future health secured". We will be regularly checking various sites and tracking the news to catch documents of interest but do lets us know library@newhamhealth.nhs.uk if you think we should add something.

NewhamCat is here...

You can now access details of the books, ebooks and DVDs available from the library using NewhamCat. Not only that - but you can see if items are on the shelf or on loan.

NewhamCat is available on any computer at Newham University Hospital NHS Trust. A link should be available from your desktop or you can open Internet Explorer and type NewhamCat into the address bar and hit return.

We will issue PINs shortly to allow you to log in and check when your books are due, extend your loans and place reservations on items your require.

Please do contact the library and let us know if you have any problems with NewhamCat.
